1. SCOPE AND APPLICATION
To perform a physical examination on the donor for confirming fulfilment of the criteria which ensure safety of the donor as well as the recipient.
2. RESPONSIBILITY
It is the responsibility of the Medical Officer to perform the physical examination on the donor.

Weighing scale
Sphygmomanometer
Clinical thermometer
CuSO4 in Coplin’s jar
Capillaries
Lancet
Donor card
5. PROCEDURE
Medical Examination:
- General Appearance: Defer a donor who appears ill, under the influence of drugs/alcohol or do not appear to be providing reliable answers to medical history.
- Check and enter donor’s weight. The weight should be >50 kg to collect 450 ml and between 45 and 50 kg to collect 350ml blood.
- Check if the blood pressure, pulse and temperature of the donor are within the acceptable limits:
- Systolic blood pressure not > 140 mm of Hg.
- Diastolic pressure not > 90 mm of Hg;
- Pulse regular, between 60 and 100 beats / minute.
- Oral temperature 37.5 C +/- 0.2C (98.6F =/- 0.5F).
- HAEMOGLOBIN ESTIMATION: Blood donation can be accepted only if the haemoglobin is > 12.5 g/dl. Test for haemoglobin by CuSO4 specific gravity method .
